Visiting Thun Castle with children

Table of Contents

Castel Thun was the home of the illustrious Counts Tono (whose name was later Germanised into Thun), one of the most powerful feudal families in Trentino .

The Castle is located in Val di Non, in a panoramic position on the hill overlooking the village of Vigo di Ton, at an altitude of 600 metres.

In 1992 , the Castle became the property of the Autonomous Province of Trento , which, after 18 years of restoration, opened its doors to visitors in 2010, after a long process of cataloguing the furnishings and the numerous books in the library.

Every room in Thun Castle is perfectly preserved and it is truly a feast for the eyes to wander through the rooms admiring the original furniture used by the Thun family from the Middle Ages until the second half of the 20th century.

The tour winds its way through the numerous rooms with their period furnishings. We find the old and new kitchens, the Bishop’s Room with its coffered ceiling and tiled stove, the room with the oven, the intimate but gracefully frescoed St. George’s Chapel, and much more.

To visit Thun Castle is to step back in time. Our daughter was convinced that a princess would turn up at any moment! Unfortunately this didn’t happen, but the room attendants were very good at holding the fort, so the visit went off without a hitch (we were, alas, on a bad day).

How long does a visit to Thun Castle last?

For the visit to Thun Castle, the Library Tower and the Carriage Gallery (a small display of the Thun family’s carriage collection), count approximately 1h 30 minutes.
